Canada’s CRTC regulatory department is planning to spend CAD$750 Million to achieve faster broadband access to residents of rural areas of Canada.
The intended speed is 25 Mbps for downloads and 5 Mbps for uploads.
The CRTC confirmed that the goal remains unchanged where they plan to reach 50/10 Mbps download and upload speeds.
The Broadband fund mandates mobile wireless access as well as fixed access, but the CRTC will prioritize the latter. "Canadians living in rural and other underserved areas need high-quality broadband Internet and mobile wireless service to fully participate in the digital economy and to access health care, education, government and public safety services," said CRTC CEO Ian Scott.
